A number of years ago I was granted the privilege of flying into the Kuparuk Oil Field, above the Arctic Circle in the remote regions of the North Slope Borough in Alaska. How it is being affected by human intrusions? Researcher” is a term that should differ greatly from the term “trophy hunter.” His answer surprised me.

The bold gray-and-white birds know what humans are good for and that is as a source of food! Gray Jays have long been more than willing to scarf down the offal that remains when hunters process a carcass so it is little wonder that they have adapted their foraging habits to include whatever scraps picnickers are willing to share.

There are many more factors than I imagined: compass errors, wind drift, overshooting, extreme weather and irruptions, natural dispersal, and human-driven vagrancy. Some birders may want to carefully read the chapter on human-driven vagrancy, which takes up the question of ship-assisted vagrancy. Next time, I’ll know why.

In 2012, I reviewed The Jewel Hunter , an absorbing narrative in which author Chris Goodie travelled throughout Asia, Africa, and Australasia to observe and photograph every Pitta species in the world. A passion for one bird family is also very useful. It is also one of the photographs by author Jon Dunn that appears in the book itself.
