You may have birding from the window of your home, you may have been counting birds at a local wildlife refuge, you may have been counting birds on a feverish run from one end of a state to the next. Overhead, we got our first species in the form of a calling Black-bellied Whistling-Duck.

I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. Ducks and herons include Garganey and Ferruginous Duck , Squacco and Purple Herons , as well as the Eurasian Spoonbill. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, wildlife is still more commonly sold to foreign hunters.

of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett has indicated that if enough people write in protest, the proposed hunting season–due to start this December– will be reconsidered. Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.
