Normally, when someone asks about this particular hobby I tell them definitively that I am a “birder.” In my backyard?

We can really ask the question and get a definitive answer from one. It’s a small education Northern White-faced Owl that completely changes shape as zoo keepers bring by other types of owls that would be a predator for that species. They don’t know that’s not on your agenda. We love those eyes.

And I did manage to see a large number of new birds — 45 new species, to be specific. This visit to southern Spain, however, fell in the middle of raptor migration, so flamingos were not on my agenda. The second family is definitely not one that you would find in an urban center. New places, new birds!
