The Ural Owl inhabits old and undisturbed boreal forests, in an unbroken belt from Sweden and Finland across Russia to Japan, and is rarely seen to the south, only here and there, in the Carpathians (Slovakia/Ukraine/Romania/eastern Serbia) and Dinaric Alps (Croatia/Bosnia/western Serbia). Some five years ago I was involved in a project of ecotourism evaluation of the river Danube in Serbia, which included the city of Belgrade, founded at the bank of this river. I am at one of my favourite local patches, the Reva Pond , on the northern outskirts – but still inside the city of Belgrade, Serbia. Nowadays, it has a feeling of an abandoned construction site. Paving of the road across the Reva Pond started and was abandoned several months later: only the sidewalk was paved. Having mobility issues, I bird by car only (or by canoe, but that is another story , of friendship and loss). And most of my local patches, the best ones – at least, are not accessible by car any more.

Over a few obstacles, we follow the dirt track into an abandoned and overgrown claypit. Yet, Starlings cannot dig and are happy to use abandoned cavities. The other day, I came at 5.40 am with an ornithologist friend of mine by his Lada 4×4. The Touareg is parked, but no one is to be seen. Three hours later, the census is done.
