As the only organization in New York City whose doors are open to any animal in need, AC&C rescues thousands of New York’s homeless, neglected, abused and abandoned animals each year. From February 25 through the end of March, the adoption fee will be just $20 for cats and rabbits, and $50 for dogs.

When that isn’t possible, many raptor rehabbers keep tabs on nests and will place an abandon chick in a foster nest. A female red-tail may leave a nest to hunt for her two chicks and return to feed a rabbit to three chicks without noting an increase in the number of chicks a rehabber has placed there.

Sometimes a chimpanzee, usually an adult male, will dance at a waterfall with total abandon. We were told that Marco, one of the rescued chimpanzees, does a dance during thunderstorms during which he looks like he’s in a trance. He never chased the rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, or deer who regularly visited. Photo by Evan Long.
