Scores of abandoned dogs, cats and livestock from Utah animal shelters become subjects of laboratory research at the University of Utah each year. University officials say they only collect animals from shelters willing to participate and pound animals are steered toward nonlethal experiments. From the AP.

That could involve teaching a dog to stay off the couch or walk better on leash, or teaching a cat to welcome other pets or to play, or simply to teach trust and love. If a cat is playing, it’s not meowing! In turn, dogs and cats can pass their evaluations at shelters, and show more of their personality, making them more adoptable.
