How to find the Ural Owl in Serbia

The usual way to find an owl would be to listen to its territorial call in the breeding season (to listen and not to lure it – I oppose the playback ), but this species is even less vocal than most other owls. The bird tolerated us for perhaps a dozen seconds before it majestically took off. Absolutely thrilled!

Birding Chongming Island in summer

Not professionally – these people come in SUVs and probably never recapture their gas money from the fish they catch (though come to think of it, neither do I with my bird photos). This is ok as birds do not have teeth anyway). One strange thing about Chongming is the inevitable presence of people fishing. End of side note.

Further down the road, we reach a derelict building with a large veranda hidden among the trees – an abandoned hunting lodge (if I were in a situation to invest, I would choose to upgrade this into a luxury wildlife lodge). Birds included common species such as Black Drongos , Jungle Babblers and a Hoopoe.

Reports abounded of a huge variety of birds, from thrushes to nightjars, terns to vireos. Despite the amount of time spent birding I did not neglect my family at all, enjoying an outing to the Bronx Zoo on Saturday afternoon and a hike at Doodletown Road in Bear Mountain State Park on Sunday. And was it ever!
