It’s illegal to raise wild birds (even orphaned ones) without state and federal permits. When that isn’t possible, many raptor rehabbers keep tabs on nests and will place an abandon chick in a foster nest. Some feed stores try to sell the ducklings as educational projects for kids over the summer.

One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. To avoid quarrels about different education styles, each adult attends a separate chick after fledging (source: HBW). Other threats arise from illegal logging, hunting for bushmeat, and other body parts (feathers, beak, etc.)
