We may not see as many 2016 species as Arjan Dwarshuis ( epic! ), but happiness is a journey, not a destination, right? I suffered a deficit of happiness this weekend when my scheduled birding time became subsumed by a rare work emergency.

I knew that the 2020-2021 winter would be worse for the lake than the 2016-2017 winter. But here in 2020, the eastern half is also suffering the effects of drought — leaving it shallow enough to keep a fair number of Teals, Pintails, and Shovelers happy.

The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. Who suffers for these crimes? Laysan albatrosses are ocean-dwelling seabirds who have 6-foot wingspans, weigh 7-8 pounds, occasionally sleep while flying, and rarely land except to raise their chicks. Sentencing for Gutierrez is July 6.
