Between finishing one graduate program and beginning another, he embarked on a whirlwind tour of Europe. Here’s his third stop: In June of 2013, we arrived in Helsinki, the capital and largest city in Finland, and our third destination on our European getaway. Of course, birding was on the itinerary! Next came a stop in Russia.

They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. I photographed it at Gorleston, on the Suffolk coast, on 5 September 2020, but I discovered that bird had been rung, as an adult, at nearby Great Yarmouth on 16 November 2013, so it was probably already nine years old, and could well have been older.
