I have followed the breeding activity of the Pied Oystercatchers in Broome along Cable Beach since July 2000 when I found the first nest site and the birds have continued to use the same territories, though there have been some partner changes. On the first trip in 2012 we used public transport to get there and the train conveniently gets you to Macarthur Square shopping centre and you can then get a bus that drops you right at the entrance to the park. We encountered one crossing the road in 2012, but with the cooler weather this year there was less turtle activity.

Reddell Beach shorebirds

The beach is in fact named after Captain John Alfred Reddell, who was murdered on 20th October 1899 on board the “Ethel” when he was returning to New Zealand on one of his journeys to transport supplies for the pearl luggers working out of Broome. Standing behind shorebirds an hour after the tide has turned.
