Hal Herzog’s “ Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat ” (Harper 2011), though fascinating, is ultimately depressing for vegans and animal rights activists. On page 172, when Herzog writes, “I am conflicted over many moral issues involving animals,” I respond, “No kidding!” The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure.

He says he hunts out of a need to take responsibility for his family, who evidently live where the supermarkets offer no meat. He says meat tastes more precious when you’ve watched it die. These birds can learn to pull a string to retrieve a short stick, use the stick to pull out a longer one, then use the long stick to draw out a piece of meat. Is this moral? the Spring 2011 issue of YES! They also modify tools for the situation at hand, a type of invention not seen in other animals.
