First Outbreak of Usutu Virus in Germany

A few dead birds were collected by authorities and sent to a laboratory for investigation. The Blackbird die-off that was observed in north-west Baden-Württemberg, neighbouring parts of Rheinland-Pfalz and southern Hessen in 2011 was caused by the Usutu Virus. The Usutu Virus’ origins are in Africa south of the Sahara.

Greater Rheas: Germany’s new Big Bird

Their current population stands at more than 150 birds (I have no recent population estimate, but there were 129 in 2012, up from 100 in 2011), and they are spreading slowly but consistently. Their ecology in Germany is being investigated, but the results have so far been inconclusive. It seems they’ve come to stay.
