My Birding Goals for 2017

10,000 Birds

I saw 425 in 2016, 510 in 2015, 560 in 2014, 517 in 2013, 529 in 2012, 375 in 2011, 601 in 2010, 609 in 2009, 313 in 2008, and 459 in 2007. That I have trips to Puerto Rico, Austria, and the Bahamas planned in the first two months of the year makes me a bit more confident than usual that I can make it again this year.

What is the National Bird of Estonia?

10,000 Birds

Since 1995 that same Estonian Ornithological Society has chosen a bird as the bird of the year and this year, 2011, it is the Barn Swallow ! Austria also so honors Hirundo rustica though that honor is watered down a bit by the national animal of Austria, which is the Golden Eagle.

First Outbreak of Usutu Virus in Germany

The Blackbird die-off that was observed in north-west Baden-Württemberg, neighbouring parts of Rheinland-Pfalz and southern Hessen in 2011 was caused by the Usutu Virus. The first detection outside Africa occurred in Vienna/Austria between 2001 and 2006. The Usutu Virus’ origins are in Africa south of the Sahara.
