Telia watches him in half-amusement, then raises and gives a low, bull-like roar, provoking the lapwings to an excited screech, makes a few steps and lies down. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory. The other two are motionless.

One of the animal keepers brought her to me, and I put her in my clinic. Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. She taught them how to hunt, and when they were released in the fall she stayed on her perch, dozing in the sun. The grand old bird became a surrogate mother, and raised them herself.

This species, one of the heaviest birds able to fly, was once common through most of southern and central Europe and all the way to Mongolia, but was driven to extinction by hunting and changes in agricultural practises in most of its European range during the 19th and early 20th century.

The USFWS designated the whooping cranes in this population “nonessential and experimental.” Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. Another thing to consider.

Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. In 2011 their population was estimated at over 3,000 individuals, increasing steadily at 5-8% every year. Birds aren’t the only animals who have made strong comebacks thanks to the Endangered Species Act.
