By their unexpected numbers and activity, I wouldn’t be surprised if they we’re planning on breeding here. Corey’s best bird of the weekend was a Grasshopper Sparrow in Queens, his first ever in his (adopted) home borough. Wouldn’t that be something?

Proposal 2013-A-3 recommends adopting that split on the basis of a 2009 study (I wrote about it back in the day here ). Proposal 2013-A-5 would remove the Hawaiian honeycreepers out of their own subfamily (Drepanidinae) and place them in the subfamily Carduelinae near the rosefinches, which a 2011 study showed to be their closest relatives.

The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage.

Outside of the tropics, nesting would usually take place in the spring (in the southern hemisphere, spring and the height of the breeding season occurs before Christmas); these pictures were taken in March as the weather in Cape Town is beginning to cool. Breeding behaviour and plumage was very apparent, but John Wise , an ex-pat Brit now resident in Orlando, told me that the birds’ activities had been held up for a couple of weeks during a cold snap that saw frosts in Florida. The nom de blog Redgannet was adopted to add an air of mystery and to make himself more attractive to women.
