It was the year 2010. They made it to the beach after 4 hours, where a large crowd of birders was assembled next to a dry and crusty sea lion carcass. A siege of the now-infamous sea lion carcass the next morning produced nothing. Of anger, fear, aggressioon… the dark side are they. Let me start from the beginning.

After a bit of searching, I found that it appears to be part of an even longer commandment: “Rise and rise again until lambs become lions” This is pretty serious stuff coming from a can of beer; all I wanted was a drink, thank you. The Bible, possibly, with all this quasi-Messianic, New Testament talk of lambs and lions?

Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills. The story goes that they only moved into the city during the time of the murderous Idi Amin who enjoyed throwing his victims off tall buildings, and the corpses were left for the Marabous to dismember.

Mosetlha Bush Camp guide awaits us by the open Land Rover and with a loaded rifle in front of the steering wheel, we continue into the bush (oddly, while observing lions and tigers in India, not a single rifle was in sight). The dirt road winds in between rocky outcrops – kopjes, by Burchell’s Zebras and Greater Kudus.
