Beljarica Backwaters: Some good news announced (but not yet official)

The initiative to protect this area was launched in 2010 within the “Wings Across the Balkans” project coordinated by BirdLife International and supported by the European Commission. The proposal was signed by Senka Lecic, Milica Dajovic, Jelena Nikolic Antonijevic and yours truly. Young Roe Deer buck in Beljarica.

The Pacific Wren of the San Francisco Botanical Garden

Nest-building must have been on their agenda, for they hopped this way and that with delicate moss bits hanging from their tiny beaks. It’s no surprise we confused Winter and Pacific Wrens; until 2010, they were considered the same species! The bird’s song was lovely, but we wanted to actually see the wren as well.

I did not see any lifers whatsoever in 2016, making it my first lifer-free year since around 2010. Shore Larks were therefore very high on my agenda during the last few days of the year as I found myself on the island Sylt, where they can frequently be found in salt marshes along the coast.

One important reason is the wide discrepancy in mid-winter count survey numbers—in Tennessee those figures were 44,000 counted in 2010 versus only 12,000 counted in 2011. Ohio has tracked two families of their state-endangered breeding sandhill cranes and found them to have wintered over in Tennessee in 2010.
