Pied Oystercatcher breeding has started!

With the data we have collected over the years we are hoping to address the predation of eggs by feral cats in the Broome area. The Western Australian government hopes to have new policies in place this year to ensure that all cats are micro-chipped and de-sexed. So, officially they “mate for life&# …but not always!

We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily! Sadly a lot of eggs are lost to feral cats and chicks are sometimes taken by birds of prey. If the parents chase the bird they may drop the chick, but from a great height this is a fatal injury.

Finally Saw-Whet

Every March, hope springs anew that I’ll cross paths with one of these feral fluffballs, but as April ends, so do another year’s delirious dreams. We got lucky in Victoria in 2009 and it even had two rather large fledglings. I’ve been chasing Northern Saw-whet Owls , those adorable little predators, for years now.
