This species prefers wetlands and its numbers have been decimated due to a combination of habitat destruction caused by human population growth and illegal removal of birds and eggs from the wild for the pet and zoo trade. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding has started!

They usually have their first eggs in place by the first week in July each year and they sit on them for 28 days. The first egg is laid followed by the second the next day and then they sit fairly continuously despite the warm day time temperature. On rare occasions we have had three eggs in a nest, but this is unusual in this area.
