My Birding Goals for 2017

Here’s hoping that 2017 is a much better year than 2016! All of 2016 only netted me one new species for Queens, a Greater White-fronted Goose. I will see at least 500 species for the year. So having reached 500 or more species in six of the last ten years makes me confident I can do it again. That really sucks.

Clare M’s 2017 Year List

This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 and 2016. The black-headed Gouldian Finches have remained in the same area feeding on the grass seeds with the other finches and were our 75th bird for 2017 and the male Gouldian Finch features in the header photo.

This all started way back in 2012 and several of us continued on in 2013 , 2014 , 2015 , 2016. On Christmas Day we did a bird list around Broome and although we also found over one hundred species on both that day and on New Year’s Day the lists were quite different.

Collaborative list – December 2018

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. Last year, Pat was the only beat invited to the awards ceremony and he swept the board. May I extend my thanks to all the beats.

During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. The equanimity occurred as the two totals passed 3560. Alphabetic Taxonomic. Western Australia. 01 Jan 2018. Red-necked Stint – Calidris ruficollis. Western Australia.

They noted 598 species as a team, bringing the year total to 2118 and pushing the life list to 3555. They are hungry, tired and don’t need to be chased. 9 beats shared 100 checklists from 8 countries (Costa Rica, USA, UK, Brazil, Serbia, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Australia. Claire and Grant went walkabout for 20 FOYs.

Collaborative List – November 2018

8 beats shared 126 checklists accounting for 704 species. Tom and Pat were toe to toe in Costa Rica , so the numbers from there outshone anything else on the list for November, with over 60% of the month’s total shared between them.
