I soon collected maps and off I went to wander the parks and look for birds. Albert Park is a large park with walking trails right around the lake and apart from when the cars are racing next month it is easily accessible. Black Swan A45 got her neck band 4th July 2007, is over 8 years old and is a paired bird. Black Swan J23.

There were similar FWS studies using similar methodologies with similar findings in 2007 and 2003. Individually, all of the indirect measures that follow are imperfect, but collectively they provide some insight. Right now, it is in the midst of an ambitious recruiting drive , to expand its membership from about 12,000 to 16,000.

The team explored Nevada and Utah, with Ridgway collecting thousands of bird specimen, plus nests and eggs for the Smithsonian. Ridgway spent the rest of his career in the Castle, the Smithsonian building that then housed the National Museum’s bird collection. It’s challenging reading.

More than 150 bird species are known to have become extinct over the past 500 years, and many more are estimated to have been driven to extinction before they became known to science. Rueppell’s (facing left) and White-backed (three birds facing right) Vultures have worryingly leapt two categories from Near-Threatened to Endangered.
