A Pied Oystercatcher family

In theory the eggs are laid, the adults share the incubation of the eggs for 28 days and then fluffy chicks emerge. This particular pair of Pied Oystercatchers first arrived on Cable Beach in 2007 to claim a territory. The eggs remained there for the whole season and we presume that they were young and inexperienced.

Egg loss to predation has been extraordinarily bad this year and all of the nests mentioned in the last post were lost and all of the pairs of Pied Oystercatchers laid a new clutch of eggs. In fact they have not just laid once again, but many pairs have laid up to five clutches of eggs this season.
