The lake consists of a large body of open water, a belt of tall yellow grass (where a big orange cat can blend and disappear if it chooses so) and, all around it, thick forests of predominantly teak, interspersed with thickets of bamboo. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. These are my first wild tigers ever!

The zoo made major changes to its emergency-response procedures, including raising the wall of the tiger grotto, found to be about 4 feet shorter than what national standards recommend. The lion house, which provided sleeping cages for all the zoo's big cats, was shut down. The Dhaliwals were awarded $900,000.

For several weeks in 2006 shortly after my arrival a strange noise could often be heard emanating from the dry hillside forest behind my home – it was beginning to freak me out a little. And fun and food are, I’d submit, not enough reason to fell a bird in which only one in three pairs manages to raise a single chick each season; a bird that has captured the imagination and hearts of tens of thousands of people, whose sonorous purr floats down from on high like the voice of a pterosaur. Solomon Islanders say that the species was driven to extinction by cats and dogs introduced by Europeans. A large, extinct relative of the (barely) extant Tooth-billed Pigeon described above was described in 2006 from remains found in Tonga ( Steadman 2006 ). Tongan Tooth-billed Pigeon ( Didunculus placopedetes ).
