I happened to work at that facility, for International Bird Rescue at the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center , part of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network. It had taken the company this long to get a team out to rescue any impacted wild animals. Imagine, though, the chances of being killed in a helicopter by a frigatebird!

I also watched a red fox bury her mate after a cougar had killed him. We were told that Marco, one of the rescued chimpanzees, does a dance during thunderstorms during which he looks like he’s in a trance. In December 2005 a 50-foot, 50-ton, female humpback whale got tangled in crab lines and was in danger of drowning.

And, Eric saying something about rescuing a bird! One of them had to be injured, possibly killed. It kills rails by clamping down on their bills as they search for food, or cripples rails by clamping down on their toes (the article estimated 75% of California Clapper Rails lost toes to these mussels).* Condor 29: 259–270.
