More than 50 years ago, the Hawaiian Goose (Nene) was one of the first birds listed under the Endangered Species Act, part of the inaugural “ Class of 1967 ”. Under the Endangered Species Act, any listing, uplisting, downlisting, or removal from a list requires a formal “rulemaking” process.

This evergreen post, first written in 2004, has become a 10,000 Birds staple. To the birder, this begs the question: what species of birds appear in the Twelve Days of Christmas ? The geese in question are probably domesticated, so we can cover our bets with the Greylag Goose ( Anser anser ), the ancestor of most domesticated geese.
