Yet, one other hunting attempt in the same area I do remember. It took place eight years later, in November 2004 by the bank of the Veliko Ratno Island. The next memorable hunt came from winter 2006/07. For the fourth sighing, I have to go back in time, to August 2004, birding the slopes of Mt. And, now, at eBird.

So while it is generally agreed that it is wrong to experiment on human beings without their consent in the expectation of making scientific discoveries, there is no such general opposition to animal vivisection. Man-hunting is ruled out as a sport but not, at least with the same degree of unanimity, fox or bird hunting.

Frigatebirds are known for their piracy, but they actually get most of their food from hunting flying fish far out to sea, a fact determined by studies utilizing GPS trackers, heart-rate monitors, and accelerometers, all attached to the bird. A little disappointing–no parties, no shopping, no love affairs.

The photographs span the years 1870 to 2004. Their names echo musically in my brain (and challenge my typing skills) as I look at photos fuzzy and sharp, and read tales of habitat encroachment, avian disease, and hunting. Some were taken of birds and mammals in zoos or aviaries, others were taken in the wild, often in remote places.
