This is an animated map made from Christmas Bird Count data of Eurasian Collared-Dove sightings from 1987 through 1997 2. This first map is data from 2002 through 2003. They often tend to displace native species, whether they be plant or animal. In warm climates they can breed year round.

Well, the ongoing issues of land development, sport shooting, and the rancher’s war on these animals keeps prairie dog populations from ever booming. This was back in 2003 so it is hard to say where those numbers fall now. I feel blessed to live in Colorado where I can see these beauties in migration and breeding.

In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.
