As we speak, in Serbia these birds are still hunted in August and September. In all European Union countries to the north and east of Serbia (except Romania), Turtle Doves are strictly protected. Money and effort are being invested in that protection. Ten years ago, those flocks were reduced to a few hundred birds.

Enter the Hackensack Meadowlands Development Commission in 1969, created by state legislation, renamed the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission in 2001. Resident birds, such as this Gray Ghost (Northern Harrier) photographed hunting near Disposal Road one winter by Ron Shields, are well represented, as are migrants and rarities.
