Quite a few species are well-established and breeding from San Diego to Los Angeles and beyond. Red-crowned Parrots have been present in southern California since at least 1963 but weren’t added to the California checklist until 2001.

Although most conservation research focuses on northern breeding grounds, many ABA Area birds spend most of the year elsewhere. But recent trends are disturbing: after years of stability, the wintering bird community declined dramatically after 2001. The Puerto Rican Vireo is declining. Research is ongoing. Long before that time Mexican domesticated Turkeys had been adopted by Native Americans in the American Southwest as well. The chance that this was a real Turkey are not great, and the chance that Columbus actually brought breeding stock from Honduras to Spain is not great, so maybe, maybe not. et al 2001.
