We met Marilyn and Leonardo at a non-descript fast-food joint’s parking lot and within 10 minutes we were in Parque Nacional La Estanzuela. Light broke and after Couch’s Kingbird I spotted my 2000 th lifer: Crimson-collared Grosbeak. A very good celebratory bird. It was amazing. That plant would not die in vain.

Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. Higher up on the Balangshan pass, Yellow-billed Choughs (Alpine Chough) benefit from the local fast food available for sale there, along with the limited environmental consciousness of some of the tourists.
