The eagle was so hypothermic I was reluctant to put her in a transport box. We all thought the kindest approach would be to end her suffering, but then…she raised her head and looked directly at me. The sharp strings are a menace to passing birds – especially kites and other raptors – who cannot see them and sometimes suffer grievous, if not fatal, wounds. Unwilling to leave the suffering birds to die, they began bringing them home, asking veterinarians to make house calls, and keeping the recuperating birds on their roof.
