In my case it is because I had only ever seen one, many years before, but had lost my details of the trip, so it never got entered when I crossed from my original wildlife-listing software to eBird. A long search failed to refind the thrush, so I moved on, happy enough, but less than elated.

The Future of Birding Field Guides is Digital

10,000 Birds

A complete guide would have pictures, audio, and video (something like Thayers birding software). No need to page through dozens of plates of similar looking species anymore. I think the digital guides need to improve in user-friendliness. The future definitely will be electronic. I think the future of ID guides is video.

Collaborative list – December 2018

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. A big thank you must also go to eBird whose listing software makes it possible. Tuttle Marsh Wildlife Area.
