Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge

Growing up in central Oregon, allowed me to experience such a diverse amount of habitat, and the wildlife that resides there. The other remarkable success story of Hart Mountain is the return of the Desert Bighorn Sheep. A White-crowned Sparrow is always a beautiful subject! The population is now estimated to be at over 500.

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. Things started on a promising note, with Mountain Bluebirds and the pale local race of Song Sparrow both evident in the visitor center parking lot.
