I could try for a Painted Redstart showing up at Lacy Park in San Marino. The drive from Yorba Linda to San Marino in the pre-dawn darkness on the day after Christmas was drizzly. Neither of those obstacles were obstacles I was willing to try to surmount. This option seemed perfect.

In 2012 I got my 500th bird in the ABA area when I twitched a Painted Redstart at Lacy Park in San Marino, California. Of course, I missed the Lewis’s Woodpecker that had been found at nearby Irvine Regional Park, which also would have been a second encounter with a species I hardly ever get to see but batting.500
