ABA-Area Bird Number 500!

I could try for a Painted Redstart showing up at Lacy Park in San Marino. The drive from Yorba Linda to San Marino in the pre-dawn darkness on the day after Christmas was drizzly. I watched the bird for a full fifteen minutes as it foraged, chased a Lesser Goldfinch off its branch, was chased off a branch in turn by an Acorn Woodpecker , and chipped its now familiar chip the entire time.

Painted Redstart at Irvine Lake

In 2012 I got my 500th bird in the ABA area when I twitched a Painted Redstart at Lacy Park in San Marino, California. Of course, I missed the Lewis’s Woodpecker that had been found at nearby Irvine Regional Park, which also would have been a second encounter with a species I hardly ever get to see but batting.500 would make me an amazing baseball star so I can’t complain too much.
