Shanghai’s Chongming Island is a well-known destination for birders, and will probably become even more important given the continued destruction of Nanhui. Yet it is generally recommended to go there in winter. In this post, I want to show that going there in summer may also be worth it.

The bird “spent five months on Mindoro Island in the Philippines during the non-breeding season and migrated through Taiwan, the Chinese east coast, and the Korean peninsula” and on to the Russian Far East (indicating a certain lack of solidarity with Ukraine).

Some Yummy-scented Winter Birding

The idea behind the visit was to read as many plastic leg rings as possible and among some 30,000 gulls, in three hours the four of us managed to read more than 40 rings, including some Caspian Gulls from Ukraine and to find the first European Herring Gull for Serbia (when I started birding, there were Herring Gulls all around, but two splits later, they are a rarity down here). Not so long ago, there was a question on this blog : which is the most interesting gull in the world?

Most scientific research really just proves the obvious. In this spirit, Taiwanese researchers studied Red Collared Doves and found that in larger groups, these birds spend less time scanning for danger when in larger groups (and correspondingly had more time for feeding).

Interestingly for me, the research paper calls throwing out the eggs infanticide, which makes me feel a bit queasy as this might potentially be on the wrong side of the Roe vs. Wade (or “Right vs. Wrong”, as The Onion calls it) debate.
