The Little Big Year-week 46: All this fun comes to an end

A few nights ago, I sat out in a light snow/rain mix, in the pitch black of Madera Canyon, trying to find a Whiskered Screech Owl. Overall World Ranking as per eBird.com 79th. New Zealand Total: 104.

The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

While visiting the Kakadu National Park, I was able to photograph this Rainbow Bee eater right after it had caught a dragonfly. With him guiding the way, we were able to track down this Papuan Frogmouth, right along side the river bank. Spending time in Darwin Australia, has made that our #1 spot to return to after the year was done.

It ran right out to greet me, and then ran all around me, checking out the cool smells on my tripod legs. Qatar species – 9. Here are a couple of the babies that have wandered off from mom. I made a stop at one of the observation platforms, and was thoroughly entertained by a Long-tailed Weasel. Australia species – 242.

Week 22: The final week in England

We had contacted the staff at the observatory, and with Jonnies help, arranged to stay right there in their newly built hostel type facility. The staff there was friendly and very helpful, it is a great place to stay that is very reasonable, and it puts you right in the middle of an amazing amount of birding areas. Qatar species 9.

I like this opinion piece from the Christian Science Monitor which calls for an "Endangered Species Hour." It's in response to the pathetic CITES conference which basically screwed marine animal protection.

Week 20: Doha, and on to Scotland!

Well, for us, we went to Doha, Qatar. That does not mean that we can’t make a stop or two along the way, right? Set right in the middle of a nice mix of brush, mature trees and agricultural areas, this place was loaded with birds. After leaving Africa, I was fearing a real let down in my birding.
