Manker’s thesis is that ornithology is an excellent gateway to students becoming science majors in college and, more broadly and longer-term, conservation-minded citizens. I think it could be done but not using the normal process. They would know the local streams, lakes, and marshes. Who would write it and how much would it cost?

Kooyman was there to work at McMurdo Station (a large American research station that we hear about throughout the book) as technical assistant on a science mission involving fish. They are excellent science writers, patiently explaining the physiological processes involved in deep diving in penguins, seals, and human.

Over two years (2011 and 2012), scientists captured 50 birds and successfully transported them from Niho to Laysan. The details can be truly granular: the “Holohil LB-2N transmitters with mortality sensors” were attached to the birds with “OstoBond.”. The “results” section summarizes the outcomes.

But early in the process of learning about the Efe I made a foray into the literature available in the 1980s of orientation and navigation, and this included the literature on birds. Homing pigeons were apparently able to find their way home after being transported in a closed box a long distance away (many hundreds of miles in some cases).
