It does not include near-shore, coastal species, like Brown Pelican, Elegant Tern, and Harbor Seal. Tail, fin, blow, and back for whales; fin, back, leaping whole body, and tail splashes for dolphins and porpoises. The number of gulls and terns covered is limited to “small, ocean-going” birds.

The seas often seemed far calmer, and full of life in early September. It was the start of the shark season, which meant I saw my first Great White Shark attacks on Northern Elephant Seals , but it was also the best season for whales. The seas were glass still, and far out we could see whales, dozens of the things.

Pacific White-sided Dolphins , 120 or so Humpback Whales , Northern Right Whale Dolphins , Blue Whales , Fin Whales , and Harbor Porpoises were all spotted to say nothing of Stellar’s Sea Lions , California Sea Lions , and a Northern Elephant Seal. Sadly, it was the best that I got.
