To the Editor: “ Getting Bacon the Hard Way: Hog-Tying 400 Pounds of Fury ” (front page, June 21), about Texas hog hunters, illustrated the barbarity of hunting with dogs. As the dogs tear chunks of flesh from the terrified pig, the hunters undoubtedly feel proud of their accomplishment.

Dogs were bred to be companion animals; pigs and cows are raised as food. Why was a dog more worthy of not being dinner than a pig? Foer misses the point of the debate completely. A decision not to eat dogs has nothing to do with our inherent hypocrisy, but with our relationship to different animals.

Mike had just invited me to Nikon’s Prostaffer Retreat that was to be held at a ranch in south Texas. “Indigenous pig sows?…Sure, “Do they have owls?” ” was the first question I asked Mike Freiberg. He wasn’t sure of the answer to my question so he referred me to the manager of the ranch.

Consider some of the victories: On November 5th, 2002, more than two and a half million Floridians voted "Yes" on Amendment 10 to amend the state constitution and prohibit the use of gestation crates , narrow metal cages where breeding pigs are kept for most of their lives. One good acquaintance I could probably call a friend is an ethics professor who flies back and forth from Texas to China frequently argued in a group pertaining to bestiality. This occurs in all animal breeders: bovine, horses, dogs, cats, pigs, and other animals. He was the only one against it for religious reasons.
