This was illegal, because according to FWC regulations, if you already own a pet that has been deemed invasive or illegal, you are allowed to keep it until its natural death, and it will not be confiscated or euthanized. Reptiles that are not treated ethically simply do not make good pets. So why not worry about the welfare of a snake?

If animals have rights, then these are welfare rather than option-rights. My pet turtle does not exercise, at his option, any rights over itself, things, or people. However, we do speak of the rights of such persons—their welfare-rights. But it doesn't follow that no animal can have a welfare -right!
