These terns are generally subtropical birds of the Pacific (I’ve seen them before in Tonga) and reach the extreme south of their range in northern New Zealand. Grey Noddy ( Procelsterna albivitta ) The remaining time on the trip mostly produced more of the same (not to imply that was a bad thing). Wicked, right?

Tongatapu and ‘Eua; Birding Southern Tonga

I mentioned last week, while talking about rails and the Pacific, that Tonga is not a particularly birdy birding destination. Tonga is still a fun place to visit, particularly if you’re a poor PhD student anxious to escape the Austral winter. Further down the coast Grey Noddies and Brown Boobies nest on the cliffs.
