I have to say that pretty much every time that I see a great photo of an owl in flight, swooping down from a perch or low to the ground, in invariably think to myself “that was baited” I might be wrong, but I’m willing to bet that I am right far more often than I am wrong. Today she found her owl.

Starlings and Eagles

Here I was, sitting patiently in a blind, watching a tethered European Starling on a string. Ravens made feints at the fake owl set further up the ridge as another attractant, Mountain Chickadees called behind us, but the hawks only trickled in. It required a bit of an ethical adjustment. Enough to draw the attention of a predator.

So this is Christmas

Or they called at us from dog teams tethered on the ice, too busy stealing food to have a closer look. Gyrfalcon and Snowy Owl also stick around, but they are harder to find. Only the planets are visible at noon, the sky too light for the brightest stars. Out of that sky, as we slid along, Ravens dipped down checking us out.
