Despite efforts by animal rights activists to stop this hunt, it is scheduled to continue. New Jersey’s first bear hunt in five years is just a week away and set to go on as planned despite a last-ditch effort by several animal rights organizations to have the hunt postponed. The name and town of the owner were engraved on a metal tag. The trap had been set in the woods right next to my house. The states which have essentially banned leghold traps are Florida, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, California, and Washington. I’d released birds there.

We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. Wicked, right? Cats Are Still Public Enemy Number One, For Birds The New York Times and Tweety have it absolutely correct. No time to take a picture. Hat-tip to Stella.

The hope was that they would be recovered with the tags attached. Prized for their feathers, most of the birds that are recovered do not have their tags, the biodata, attached.
