A large and striking bird like this would be hard to neglect in a museum collection. This came as rumor of a turkey-like bird occurs in the steep canyons on the foothill of the western Andes. Guans have also been introduced in the Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge. This flock is composed of about 54 birds including nine breeding pair.

After we got back to the cars everyone pulled chairs out and sat down for a cup of tea (I had neglected to bring some but was not to go without thanks to the hospitality of these fine people). I talked to an American visitor from Hawaii who had brought his wildlife-mad son along. Not that we lingered to look, we were on a mission.
