The Waterhole at Forest Park: The Best Place in New York City to See Wood-Warblers

In the one hundred and six minutes I spent at the waterhole seventeen species of wood-warbler stopped by for a drink or a bath. Unfortunately, this has been a very dry spring in New York City so, as you can see in the photos above, intrepid Queens birders have made makeshift bird baths to take the place of what is normally a vernal pool.

Light Warbler Action in Central Park

It had been a long time since I’d seen any warblers besides Yellow and Nashville ; it had been a long time since I’d seen any Northern Cardinals or Blue Jays , period. My last species in the park was Wood Duck , which we have in Montana too but which is always fun to see. Anyone have any idea what species this is?
