Barbed wire fences are terrible for wildlife, snaring large birds and mammals alike…but for smaller passerines, they sure make good perches. This stoked Great Egret was at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, CA. This is one of many Black Terns flying low over a bridge at Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota.

The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. The Service proposes opening the following refuges to sport fishing for the first time: North Dakota. Ardoch National Wildlife Refuge : Open to sport fishing.
