Why were these two smaller lizards seemingly latched onto a larger, dead one?

I don't know the species, but they were small, and for context, I live in Los Angeles to give an idea of the different species here. The big lizard had no visible wounds, so it's safe to say it died of natural causes, but then why were its eyes bloodshot? Sitting on the ground were 3 brown lizards.
