Even as a veteran wildlife rehabilitator, I could scarcely believe the sight before me. We all thought the kindest approach would be to end her suffering, but then…she raised her head and looked directly at me. In mammals, maggots eat only dead tissue and are occasionally used to debride wounds. We had to find it.

Dedicated keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's Nairobi Elephant Nursery in Kenya protect baby Shukuru from the cold and rain, and the risk of pneumonia, with a custom-made raincoat. Her deep wounds were filled with maggots. A mobile vet unit was able to tranquilize her, clean her wounds, and extract the spear.

Several artificial waterholes that have been placed along these riverbeds are a magnet for wildlife and Leeudril is one such location. The killing of other predators eliminates competition for prey and at the same time also provides calories, so is doubly beneficial. Along the way she picked up two thorns in her back left footpad.
