Other areas of New York City where the parakeets were seen in 1970 included the upper East side of Manhattan, Great Kills, Staten Island, Ellis Island and the area around the Statue of Liberty. Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold. Con Ed does not appear to want to confirm these stories.)
